Five of Cups

The Five of Cups is grief over what has spilled. It acknowledges real loss and asks you to notice, in time, what still stands behind you.

Upright

  • grief
  • loss
  • regret
  • disappointment
  • what remains

A figure in a dark cloak stands with head bowed, looking at three overturned cups on the ground. Behind them, two cups remain upright, and a river leads toward a bridge and a small house. The card honours sadness. Something has been lost or has gone wrong, and it is right to feel that. Grief does not need to be hurried or explained. It often marks the days after a loss, when the mind returns again and again to what could have been done differently.

At the same time, the picture holds a quiet question: what is still standing behind you? The card does not ask you to cheer up. It asks only that you leave room to turn around when you are ready. For now, let yourself feel what you feel, accept comfort from someone close, and trust that the path to the house is still there.

Reversed

  • recovery
  • acceptance
  • forgiveness
  • moving on
  • looking again

Reversed, the figure begins to turn. Healing is under way: you start to see what is left, to forgive, or to make peace with something that went badly. The sadness may still be there, but it no longer fills the whole view.

It can also show a person who has held a loss too tightly or too long, replaying it again and again. If so, look gently at what the grief is protecting and whether you are ready to let a little of it go. Moving on does not mean forgetting. It means carrying the memory in a way that leaves your hands free. Gentle routines, time with people who understand, and a little patience will do more for you than any argument with the past.

Love, work and money

  • Love, upright

Sorrow about a loss, a breakup, a disappointment or a love that did not turn out as hoped. Allow the feeling and lean on people who care for you. There may be good things in your life that you will be able to see again in time.

  • Love, reversed

Healing after hurt. You begin to forgive, to accept the end of something, or to feel hopeful again. Take care not to rush into something new to fill the gap. Let the recovery be steady.

  • Work, upright

Disappointment over a lost opportunity, a failed project or a change that did not go your way. Allow yourself to feel it, and then gather what can be learned. Not everything was lost. Write down what you learned, and what you would like to keep from the experience, however painful it was.

  • Work, reversed

Recovering from a setback and looking at what remains. Acceptance helps you move on. Take stock of your skills and relationships, and choose a next step that builds on them. Rebuild at your own pace, and tell trusted people how they can support you while you do.

  • Money, upright

A disappointment about money or a loss that stings. Avoid reactions driven only by regret. Look at what is intact, and make a plain account of where you stand. Avoid making sweeping decisions while grief is fresh, and give yourself time to see the whole picture.

  • Money, reversed

You recover from a loss and begin to rebuild. A calmer outlook helps good decisions. Make small steps toward steadiness and let go of blaming yourself for what is past. Take an honest inventory of what is still yours, and plan from there rather than from the loss.

Yes or no

  • Upright: No

Disappointment colours the picture, so the answer is no for now.

  • Reversed: Not yet clear

Recovery is under way, so the answer depends on how much you have healed.

In the traditional image

A figure wrapped in a dark cloak stands with bowed head, facing three spilled cups on the ground, with dark liquid running out. Two upright cups stand unnoticed behind him. A river runs through the scene toward a bridge and a distant house, which suggest the way back to comfort.
