Six of Cups

The Six of Cups is the warmth of the past: old friends, simple pleasures, acts of kindness. It reminds you of what once nourished you, and of what you can offer now.

Upright

  • nostalgia
  • childhood
  • kindness
  • reunion
  • innocence

In a sunny courtyard, a child offers a cup full of flowers to a smaller child, and more flower-filled cups stand around them. The card is about the gentle side of memory: childhood places, old friends, a song that takes you back. It can bring a reunion or a message from someone from your past. It often brings a message, a visit or an object that carries you straight back to a gentler time.

Six is the number of harmony and giving, and here the giving is simple and sincere. Look at what in your past made you feel safe and playful, and bring a little of it into the present. Be generous without keeping accounts. Small acts of kindness, shared memories and plain affection are worth more than they seem.

Reversed

  • stuck in the past
  • moving on
  • idealising
  • unrealistic memory
  • growing up

Reversed, the past either holds on too tightly or lets go. You may be living in a memory that is warmer than the reality was, comparing today unfavourably with an imagined golden time. Or an old connection may return in a way that does not fit who you are now.

Honour what was good without trying to relive it. Ask which part of the past you are really missing, such as ease, closeness or freedom, and look for a way to build it in the present. If a memory is painful, you may need to put it in its place rather than visit it again and again. If a memory still hurts, a conversation with a trusted friend or counsellor can help you hold it without being held by it.

Love, work and money

  • Love, upright

Tenderness, nostalgia and gentle affection. An old friend or former partner may return, or a relationship feels comforting in a familiar way. Share memories and kindness, and let simple gestures carry meaning.

  • Love, reversed

Holding on to the past, or comparing a current relationship with an earlier one. Be honest about what you miss and what you have. A reunion may not suit who you have become. Make room for something new.

  • Work, upright

Working with familiar people, returning to an earlier field, or a role that rewards patience and care. Teaching and mentoring suit you now. Draw on old contacts and share what you know generously. Look for someone to mentor, or a person who helped you early on, and let them know it mattered.

  • Work, reversed

Clinging to how things used to be, or an unrealistic memory of a former role. Adjust to the present and learn what is needed now. Respect the past, and let it inform rather than limit you. Take note of what you loved about earlier work, and ask how a version of it could fit you now.

  • Money, upright

Gifts, inheritance or sharing with family and friends. Generosity feels natural. Enjoy giving, and be sure you can afford it. Old connections may help with a practical matter. Share what you have in ways that do not leave you short, and accept help with warmth when it is offered.

  • Money, reversed

Spending on nostalgia, or old habits that no longer suit your situation. Update your approach to the present facts. Be careful with promises tied to past loyalties. Check older plans, accounts and agreements to see whether they still fit your current life.

Yes or no

  • Upright: Yes

Kind, familiar and generous energy supports a yes.

  • Reversed: Not yet clear

Check that you are choosing for the present, not for the past.

In the traditional image

Two children stand in a walled courtyard of an old house, one offering the other a cup filled with white flowers. More cups of flowers sit on the ground and on a stone pedestal nearby. The sunlit scene has a gentle, storybook look, with an older figure walking away in the background.
