Justice
Justice is about weighing things honestly. It points to cause and effect, and asks you to see a situation clearly and act fairly within it.
Upright
- fairness
- truth
- cause and effect
- accountability
- clarity
Justice holds a sword and a pair of scales, and she looks straight at you. The card speaks of truth, fairness and consequence. What you have done and what has been done to you are being weighed, and the result is likely to feel balanced even if it is not what you hoped for. This is a card of clear thinking, of decisions made on facts, and of honesty with yourself about your part in a situation.
When it appears, take stock. Where have you acted well, and where would you now do things differently? Are you being fair to everyone involved, including yourself? Agreements, contracts and decisions benefit from careful reading. Accept responsibility for your choices, and expect that honest actions will bring honest results. Fairness is not always comfortable, but it gives you ground you can stand on.
Reversed
- unfairness
- dishonesty
- avoiding responsibility
- bias
- imbalance
Reversed, Justice points to something out of balance. This may be unfairness you are experiencing, or a bias in how you see things. It can also show an unwillingness to take responsibility: blaming others, bending the facts, or hoping the consequences of a decision will quietly disappear. Dishonesty, whether given or received, is a theme here.
Start by looking at the facts and separating them from your feelings about them. If you have a share in the problem, own it plainly. If you have been treated unfairly, gather what you need and ask for it to be put right in a calm way. Balance returns when the truth is allowed to be seen.
Love, work and money
- Love, upright
In love, Justice favours honesty and fairness. A relationship does well when each person takes responsibility and gives as much as they receive. It may be a time for a frank conversation, or for a commitment that reflects what you have both put into it. Clear, kind truth strengthens a bond.
- Love, reversed
In love, reversed, there may be an imbalance, with one person giving more than the other, or a lack of honesty. Notice what you are not saying. Bring the issue to the surface and aim for fairness, not for winning. Own your part and ask the other person to own theirs.
- Work, upright
At work, the card favours agreements, contracts and fair treatment. Read the details and make sure the terms match what was discussed. If you are involved in a dispute, a calm presentation of the facts serves you well. Act with integrity, and expect your work to be judged on its merits.
- Work, reversed
At work, reversed, unfair treatment or unclear terms may be a concern. Document what you can and raise issues in an orderly way. Check your own part for bias or shortcuts. Seek advice from a suitable professional where a formal decision is involved.
- Money, upright
With money, Justice favours fair dealings, honest records and balanced accounts. Check the paperwork. Pay what is owed and expect to be paid what is due. Clear, accurate information is the best basis for any decision.
- Money, reversed
With money, reversed, look for errors, unclear terms or an unequal arrangement. Do not ignore bills or hope a problem goes away. Look at the facts, ask questions, and resolve the imbalance in a straightforward way.
Yes or no
- Upright: Yes
If the facts and the fair course agree, the answer is yes.
- Reversed: No
Something is unfair or not fully honest, so the answer leans towards no until it is put right.
In the traditional image
A crowned figure in a red robe sits between two pillars, with a purple curtain behind. In her right hand she raises an upright sword, and in her left she holds a pair of balanced scales. Her gaze is level and direct, and the whole picture is symmetrical and still.
