Knight of Cups

The Knight of Cups arrives bearing an offer from the heart: an invitation, a romantic gesture or a creative ideal. He is gentle and charming, and he moves with a dreamer's pace.

Upright

  • romance
  • offer
  • idealism
  • charm
  • following the heart

A knight rides calmly on a white horse, holding a cup carefully out in front of him. His helmet and boots bear small wings, and the land around him is green with a quiet river. Unlike the Knight of Wands, he does not charge. The card describes an approach led by feeling: an offer, a proposal, an invitation or a creative vision brought forward with care. He is the dreamer on horseback who arrives with a letter, an idea or an invitation that tugs at the heart.

This card invites you to follow your heart in a mature way. Be romantic and imaginative, and let your values guide you. When something is offered to you, consider it with an open mind. When you are the one offering, speak sincerely and make sure what you promise can be done. Beauty and kindness matter, and so does follow-through.

Reversed

  • unrealistic
  • moodiness
  • empty promises
  • jealousy
  • disappointment

Reversed, charm may hide emptiness. A tempting offer might have little behind it, or moods may swing so that affection is warm one day and gone the next. There is a risk of living in a fantasy of how things should be, and feeling let down when real people fail to match it.

Check whether words and actions agree, in others and in yourself. If you are the dreamer, ground one ideal in a concrete step. If you are dealing with one, ask for clear commitments. You can enjoy romance and still ask direct questions. Emotional honesty is more attractive than any display. If you feel swept away, slow the pace and ask for plain details, since a good offer can withstand a few questions.

Love, work and money

  • Love, upright

Romance, sincerity and a gesture from the heart. An invitation or proposal may arrive, or you may be the one offering. Be authentic, take your time and let kindness lead. Mean what you say.

  • Love, reversed

Charm without substance, mood swings or an idealised picture of love. Watch for promises that are not backed by action. Be honest about what you want, and ask for the same in return.

  • Work, upright

An offer, invitation or creative proposal arrives. Your imagination and tact serve you well. Present ideas with care and sincerity, and consider whether an offer fits your values. Make your pitch with feeling, and back it with a clear outline of what you will deliver and when.

  • Work, reversed

Unrealistic plans, unfulfilled promises or mood affecting your work. Ask for specifics and put agreements in writing. Bring one inspiring idea into a workable plan. Keep a record of what has been said and agreed, and politely ask for clarification on anything vague.

  • Money, upright

An offer or opportunity connected to a creative or caring pursuit. Look at it with an open mind and read the details. Enthusiasm is fine as long as the numbers agree. Compare the offer with your actual needs, and take a few days to think it over before you answer.

  • Money, reversed

Tempting but vague offers, or spending driven by mood. Slow down, ask questions and check claims. Do not let charm or a good story stand in for facts. Check who stands behind the promise, and ask for clear terms before any money changes hands.

Yes or no

  • Upright: Yes

A sincere, hopeful offer is on the table, so the answer leans yes.

  • Reversed: No

Promises may be thin, so wait for firmer evidence.

In the traditional image

A young knight in armour decorated with wings rides a white horse at a slow, steady walk. He holds a golden cup before him at arm's length and gazes at it. A stream and gentle hills lie ahead, and fish appear on his tunic. The calm pace sets him apart from the other knights.
