Knight of Wands

The Knight of Wands charges ahead with passion, confidence and a taste for adventure. It is energy in full flight, and its gift and risk are the same thing: it does not wait.

Upright

  • adventure
  • action
  • passion
  • boldness
  • speed

A knight in armour with a fiery plume gallops across a desert on a rearing horse, holding a staff that has begun to sprout. His surcoat carries salamanders, and his pace is fast. The card describes bold, restless energy: a person or phase of life that wants action, change and travel, and does not care for waiting around. He is the one who says yes to the trip, the move or the change, and gets people moving.

The Knight acts first and works out details after. That makes him inspiring and sometimes exhausting. If you take on his role, use the drive to start something and meet people, but check where you are heading now and then. If you are meeting such a person, enjoy their warmth and ambition while allowing for the fact that their interest may move on quickly.

Reversed

  • recklessness
  • haste
  • burnout
  • scattered
  • impatience

Reversed, the horse runs faster than the rider can steer. Impulsiveness, impatience and a short temper can cause avoidable trouble. The Knight may also stall: plenty of talk and plans, but little follow-through, or an abrupt change of direction when the first excitement fades.

Take a breath before the next big step. Ask what you are rushing toward, or away from. Burnout is a risk, since this energy burns hot. Choose a goal that deserves your full effort and pace yourself toward it. Strength that lasts is the kind you are willing to spend a little at a time. Ask yourself whether you are chasing something or running from it, then decide how fast to go.

Love, work and money

  • Love, upright

Passionate, adventurous and direct. A whirlwind attraction or a partner who brings excitement. Enjoy the energy and be honest about your intentions so that no one is surprised later.

  • Love, reversed

Fast to start, slow to stay. Hot and cold behaviour, impulsiveness or hasty decisions can hurt. Slow down, communicate clearly and make sure your actions match your words.

  • Work, upright

Drive and ambition push a project forward. This is a good time for bold moves, travel or new roles. Stay aware of the details so that speed does not outrun quality. Build in time to check the facts, and bring a steady colleague who can handle the follow-through.

  • Work, reversed

Reckless choices, scattered effort or conflicts caused by impatience. Plan before acting, finish what you have started, and avoid burning bridges in a hurry. Write down the cost of the plan in time and money before the thrill carries you into the details.

  • Money, upright

Energetic action around earning, perhaps through a bold new venture. Keep track of what it costs, and avoid committing everything on enthusiasm alone. Set a spending limit before you begin, and review how it is going after a week.

  • Money, reversed

Impulsive spending or hasty decisions. Take time to compare the options. Pause before large commitments, and let the excitement fade before you decide. Put big purchases on a list and look at it again after three days.

Yes or no

  • Upright: Yes

Bold energy favours going ahead, as long as you keep watch on the details.

  • Reversed: No

Haste is the risk here, so hold off and look again.

In the traditional image

A knight in full armour rides a rearing horse across a desert, with pyramids in the distance behind him. His helmet carries red plumes, his tunic shows salamanders, and he grips a staff with new leaves in one hand. The horse's raised legs and flying cloak give the picture a sense of speed.
