Seven of Cups
The Seven of Cups is a crowd of tempting possibilities floating in front of you. It celebrates imagination and warns that not every glittering option is real.
Upright
- choices
- fantasy
- imagination
- illusion
- wishful thinking
A silhouette faces seven cups floating in clouds, each holding something different: a face, a veiled figure, a snake, a castle, jewels, a laurel wreath and a dragon. The card shows a mind full of options and daydreams. Some are inspiring, some are distractions, and from where the figure stands, it is hard to tell which is which. It often comes at a crossroads, when a flood of ideas makes it hard to see which are yours and which are borrowed.
Seven is the number of testing, and here the test is discernment. Enjoy imagining, because dreaming is how many good plans begin. Then sort the pictures from the plans. Ask which option you can actually take a step toward this week, and which is a pleasant way of avoiding a decision. Choose one, and give it your full attention.
Reversed
- clarity
- decision
- focus
- seeing through
- reality check
Reversed, the clouds begin to thin. You may see through a fantasy, make a decision at last, or discover that the shiny option was not what it seemed. It can be a relief, though it may also bring a small sadness as an illusion fades.
It can also mean overwhelm, where too many choices lead to none. Narrow the field by asking what truly matters to you and what you can commit to now. A clear no to several options gives you the energy for one real yes. Do not wait for a perfect choice, because there rarely is one. Try saying out loud the one thing you would pick if no one were watching, and see how it sounds.
Love, work and money
- Love, upright
Many possibilities, daydreams and idealised pictures of love. Enjoy the imagination, and be careful of seeing someone only as you wish them to be. Ask what is real and what is projection before you invest your feelings.
- Love, reversed
Clarity about a relationship or a fantasy. You see someone more truthfully, or you choose among your options. It may sting but it helps. Decide based on what is actually in front of you.
- Work, upright
Plenty of ideas and options, but not all are practical. Brainstorm freely, then test each one against reality. Avoid scattering your effort over many half-formed paths. Choose one idea, set a small test with a date, and let the result decide whether to continue.
- Work, reversed
A decision is finally made, and focus returns. You can see what is workable and what is not. Commit to one direction, and give it a defined period of time. Give each option a simple score for how real and how important it feels, and be honest about the lowest ones.
- Money, upright
Tempting offers and big promises. Be wary of anything that looks too good to be true. Check facts and get independent advice before committing to a plan that depends on wishful thinking. Ask for the details, wait before replying, and talk to someone who has no stake in the outcome.
- Money, reversed
A clear look at your money situation. Illusions fall away and you can make a realistic plan. Pick a practical goal, and set aside the options that depend on luck. Start with the one realistic goal, write down the steps, and let it carry you rather than the big dream.
Yes or no
- Upright: Not yet clear
Too many hopes and too few facts, so check what is real first.
- Reversed: Yes
With clearer sight, a decision is possible and a yes is likely.
In the traditional image
A dark figure seen from behind faces a bank of clouds in which seven golden cups float, each holding a different vision. They show a human head, a veiled form, a coiled serpent, a tower, a heap of jewels, a victory wreath and a dragon. The picture is of daydream and temptation.
