Six of Pentacles
The Six of Pentacles is about the flow of giving and receiving. It asks whether what passes between people is fair, kind and freely offered.
Upright
- generosity
- fair exchange
- sharing
- kindness
- giving and receiving
A well-dressed figure holds a pair of scales and drops coins into the hands of two kneeling people. The picture is about generosity and the balance of exchange. You may be helping someone, being helped, or sharing something of your time, skill or resources. Both sides of that exchange are part of a healthy life.
Giving works best when it is freely offered and received without shame. Look for the fair balance: not so much that you drain yourself, and not so little that others go without. If you are receiving, accept with thanks. If you are giving, give because you can, and trust that kindness tends to circulate. Time, attention and skill count as gifts too, and sometimes they are worth more than money.
Reversed
- strings attached
- imbalance
- debt
- one-sided help
- stinginess
Reversed, the scales tip. Generosity may come with strings attached, help may be one-sided, or someone may keep a tally of favours. It can also show unpaid debts, resentment, or a reluctance to share what you have.
Examine where the balance has gone wrong. If you give too much, set limits kindly. If you take too much, consider what you can offer back. Honest, clear terms between people prevent bitterness, and generosity feels better when it is chosen. The healthiest arrangements are the ones where each person can say plainly what they expect.
Love, work and money
- Love, upright
Care shown through giving and receiving. Thoughtful gestures, shared effort and mutual support strengthen the bond. Be generous without keeping score, and let a partner look after you too. Look out for the quiet ways each of you gives, since they are easy to overlook.
- Love, reversed
An imbalance, where one person gives more or keeps score. Talk about it plainly. Fair give-and-take, rather than silent tallying, helps care flow in both directions. Resentment is a useful signal that something needs adjusting, so listen to it kindly.
- Work, upright
Fairness, mentoring and good support at work. Someone may help you, or you may help someone else. Share credit and knowledge, and accept recognition where it is deserved. Offering help or accepting a mentor's time is a fair trade that strengthens everyone.
- Work, reversed
Unfair treatment, unclear terms or favours with conditions. Make agreements clear and ask for what is fair. Give what you can without being used. Say clearly what you can and cannot take on, so goodwill doesn't turn into an obligation.
- Money, upright
Fair exchange. Sharing, helping or receiving support can all be part of a healthy approach to money. Keep it open and fair, and give only what you can comfortably spare. Giving freely, within your means, and receiving gracefully are both part of a healthy relationship with money.
- Money, reversed
Be careful with unclear arrangements, loans or gifts with strings. Keep agreements plain and written down. Seek proper advice for anything substantial. Clear terms from the start protect friendships as well as finances.
Yes or no
- Upright: Yes
A fair, generous exchange supports a yes.
- Reversed: Not yet clear
The terms are lopsided, so settle them before you agree.
In the traditional image
A merchant in a rich robe holds a set of scales in one hand while placing coins into the hand of a kneeling figure, with a second figure waiting beside. Six pentacles hang in the sky, some in the scale and some above. The scales suggest fairness, while the mixed positions of the figures show that giving and receiving change places.
