King of Cups

The King of Cups is the master of his own feelings: calm, kind and wise in the midst of change. He holds deep emotion without being swept away by it.

Upright

  • emotional balance
  • calm
  • compassion
  • wisdom
  • diplomacy

A king sits on a throne that floats upon rough seas, holding a cup in one hand and a sceptre in the other. A ship sails on one side and a fish leaps on the other. The waves move all around him, and he stays steady. The card is about emotional maturity, the ability to feel deeply and still act with clear judgement. He is the mentor, counsellor or elder whose calm helps others find their own way through trouble.

As the king, he combines the depth of water with control and care. In your own life, this can mean listening before you react, being generous without needing credit, and keeping your head in a storm. You do not have to hide your feelings to be calm. You simply give them room, and then choose how to respond.

Reversed

  • suppression
  • moodiness
  • manipulation
  • coldness
  • emotional overload

Reversed, the calm may be a mask. Feelings are pushed down until they erupt, or used to manipulate others through guilt, silence or mood. A leader may appear generous but be quietly controlling, or a caring person may become distant and cold to protect themselves.

Honesty is the way back. Acknowledge what you feel, even if only to yourself, and find a safe place to express it. If you notice that you hold back to keep control, try telling one trusted person the real picture. Strong emotion is not a danger when it is spoken. It becomes harmful when it is left unspoken and works in secret. Start with something small and safe, and let one honest sentence prepare the ground for the rest.

Love, work and money

  • Love, upright

A steady, kind and emotionally mature approach to love. You or a partner can offer support through difficulty without losing balance. Be open about your feelings and patient with theirs.

  • Love, reversed

Hidden feelings, emotional distance or subtle manipulation. A partner may withdraw, or you may be holding back. Be direct and kind about what you feel, and avoid using silence as a tool.

  • Work, upright

Wise, diplomatic leadership. You handle people and pressure with composure and care. Mediate disagreements, support your team and make decisions with both compassion and sense. Take the long view in disputes, and let your reputation for fairness do some of the work.

  • Work, reversed

Mood swings, hidden agendas or an inability to express concern. Be clear and honest in your communication. Seek support if stress is building up, and do not use people's feelings to steer them. Look at your workload and the signals your body gives, and speak up early rather than when you are worn out.

  • Money, upright

Calm and generous with resources, balancing heart and head. Make decisions with a cool mind, and give within your means. A trusted adviser or mentor may help. Combine a warm instinct with a cool review of the numbers, so that kindness does not outrun your means.

  • Money, reversed

Emotional reactions to money, or hidden worry. Talk openly about finances and keep clear records. Do not let pride or silence stop you from asking for guidance. Write down your concerns, share them with someone who knows the figures, and plan from there.

Yes or no

  • Upright: Yes

Steady judgement and care support a positive answer.

  • Reversed: Not yet clear

Unspoken feelings are in the way, so be honest before you decide.

In the traditional image

A king in a blue robe sits on a stone throne set on a platform amid a choppy sea, holding a golden cup in one hand and a short sceptre in the other. A ship sails behind him on the left, and a fish leaps from the waves on the right. He wears a fish pendant and looks calmly outward.
