King of Swords

The King of Swords rules by reason and fairness. He is the mind in full command: informed, impartial and able to make a clear decision and explain it.

Upright

  • authority
  • reason
  • fairness
  • expertise
  • integrity

A king sits upright on a throne with a sword pointing to the sky, butterflies and clouds around him. He stands for mastery of the mind: knowledge, discipline and ethical judgement. This can be a person such as an adviser, a teacher or a lawyer, or the part of you that thinks things through and keeps to principle.

Where this King appears, clear and fair thinking is in demand. Gather the facts, weigh them without favouritism, and decide. Explain your reasons, hold to your values, and be open to correction. His authority comes from competence and honesty, not from force, and good rulings take both reason and care. Hold your standards, and explain them well enough that people can see the reasons and not only the rule.

Reversed

  • rigidity
  • control
  • cold logic
  • misused power
  • over-criticism

Reversed, the King's authority turns harsh or cold. Reason becomes rigid, rules replace judgement, and criticism replaces guidance. It can describe someone using their expertise to control or to belittle, or a time when you are too hard on yourself.

Bring back flexibility and humility. Ask whether the standards you apply are fair and whether feelings deserve more room. If you face a controlling voice, stay calm and factual, and don't try to out-argue it. Authority is at its best when it is used to help others think well. Ask yourself whether you want to be right or to be useful, since the two are not always the same.

Love, work and money

  • Love, upright

Stable, honest and respectful partnership. Clear agreements and fairness matter. You or a partner may show care through reliability and good sense. Open conversations about expectations and values will strengthen things. Reliability and fairness are real forms of love, and so is a willingness to say, I was wrong.

  • Love, reversed

Control, rigidity or emotional distance. Logic may be used to shut down feelings. Make room for warmth, and listen without trying to win. If you feel dismissed, name how it feels, calmly and clearly.

  • Work, upright

Leadership, expertise and sound decisions. A good time to take charge of a complex matter, give fair judgement and support clear policies. Seek advice from someone experienced, or offer your own. Integrity is your best credential. Advisers, mentors and written policies all get a boost, and so does your own ability to explain a decision.

  • Work, reversed

A rigid or overbearing approach harms the team. Be willing to hear other views and to admit mistakes. If an authority figure is unfair, document facts and find a trusted route to raise concerns.

  • Money, upright

Sound, rational thinking about money. Facts, records and good advice are all on your side. A good moment to review your position calmly and make informed choices with qualified guidance. A calm, organised review of the facts, with expert input if the matter is large, is the right approach.

  • Money, reversed

Rigid views or a distrust of advice can limit you. Check that your reasoning is open to new information, and be wary of anyone who pushes cold logic to pressure you.

Yes or no

  • Upright: Yes

The facts and the principles line up, so the answer is yes.

  • Reversed: Not yet clear

Rigid thinking may be hiding a better answer, so look again with an open mind.

In the traditional image

A king sits on a tall throne carved with butterflies and winged figures, an upright sword in his right hand, a stern crown on his head. Clouds fill the sky, and a few small birds fly in the distance. His blue cloak and level gaze suggest a ruler who governs by thought and law. The sword points straight up, in service of clear judgement.
